AGRICULTURE ·  COLOURED DIESEL

Coloured diesel for southwestern Ontario farms.

The dyed diesel that runs your tractors, combines, dryers, and on-farm stationary equipment — on a standing route, with the same rep year-round.

01 / WHERE IT FITS

Where coloured diesel is allowed, and where it isn’t.

Coloured diesel is ordinary diesel, dyed red, exempt from the 9.0 ¢/L Ontario fuel tax. The bright line is short: if a piece of equipment carries a number plate, it can’t burn coloured — even when the work is entirely on the farm.

Allowed · unlicensed equipment

  • Tractors, combines, swathers, sprayers, planters
  • Skid steers, on-farm forklifts, grain augers
  • Grain dryers and stationary on-farm generators
  • Irrigation pumps and other unlicensed stationary equipment
  • Commercial marine engines (not pleasure craft)
  • Reefer or PTO auxiliary units fed from a fuel tank physically separate from the truck’s drive engine

Prohibited · anything HTA-plated

  • Any vehicle registered under the Highway Traffic Act
  • Farm-plated trucks and pickups — even on the farm, even between contiguous parcels
  • A licensed truck’s propulsion tank, even if the trailer carries a reefer
  • Pleasure craft and recreational vehicles

03 / HOW WE HANDLE IT

What a Boucher & Jones coloured-diesel account looks like.

One rep on your account, year-round. Coloured for the field, clear for the truck, propane for the dryer, DEF for the newer equipment — sorted on one conversation.

  • Standing route

Scheduled drops sized to your tank cycle, with a named rep on the account. After-hours dispatch when the harvest window runs late — same number you call during the day.
  • Tank program

A tank sized to your operation, installed to code by a certified petroleum mechanic. Ministry labels, red-band dispenser markings, and the paperwork the inspector wants — handled at install, not later.
  • DEF, paired

Newer equipment burns DEF alongside its diesel — roughly 2–5% by volume. We size totes and bulk to how hard you’re running, so the dryer week doesn’t become the DEF-shortage week.
  • One supplier, both colours

Coloured for the field. Clear for the farm-plated truck, run off our cardlock side at the same rates. Same rep on both lines, one invoice if you want it.

04 / THE RULES

The law, in plain language.

Ontario’s coloured-fuel rules read short and punish long. The full reference covers what coloured diesel is, where it can and can’t go, what the Ministry actually enforces, and what an on-farm tank has to be — every fact source-attributed.

  • 01

    Eligibility, in detail

Every equipment category, the licensed-vehicle rule in full, and the reefer carve-out (separate fuel tank only).

  • 02

    The penalty ladder

POA set fine, the 3× / 10× / 13× tax back-charge ladder, and the $1M / 2-year ceiling — what each one actually applies to.

  • 03

    Records the Ministry wants

The seven-year retention rule, what bulk-purchase receipts must show, and where the burden of proof sits.

  • 04

    Tank rules, in full

Ontario Fire Code setbacks, secondary containment thresholds, labels and tags, and the spill-response trigger.

05 / FAQ

A few practical questions.

01How do you size a tank for my operation?
We look at peak-week burn through harvest, the dryer’s draw, and what the operation expects to add over the next two seasons. The right size is the one that gets you through harvest without an emergency fill and through winter without dead capacity. A site visit takes an afternoon and gives you a sized recommendation with the Ontario Fire Code setbacks already factored in.OPERATIONS
02How fast can you get out on a harvest emergency?
After-hours, you call the same number you call during the day, and the rep on your account picks up. Through harvest we keep extra volume on hand and trucks moving on the standing route, so we’re not starting cold when you call. The honest answer on a specific window depends on where you sit on the route — call us and we can be specific.DISPATCH
03What does the supplier switch look like mid-season?
Cleaner than you’d expect. We work the changeover around your fill cycle so the existing tank runs down on its own pace. The B&J side picks up at install — Ministry labels supplied, dispenser markings squared away, route added to the standing schedule. The first delivery comes sized to give you slack while the calendar settles.OPERATIONS
04How much DEF will my newer equipment use?
Newer engines burn DEF alongside their diesel — roughly 2–5% by volume, depending on how hard the machine is working. A tractor that goes through 800 L of diesel in a week will run through somewhere in the order of 20–40 L of DEF over the same week. A tote that covers two weeks of peak operation is the right unit for most grain operations.ISO 22241 · OEM SCR SPEC
